The Government of Kerala is reviving its plan to open BEVCO (Kerala State Beverages Corporation) outlets at KSRTC bus terminals. Initially halted due to public controversy, the project will now commence with the first outlet at the Sultan Bathery bus terminal in Wayanad district. The outlet is expected to become operational next month.

Objective of the Project:

The government aims to generate additional revenue by leasing out unused commercial spaces in various KSRTC bus terminals. Establishing BEVCO outlets in these locations will provide KSRTC with a steady rental income. The government argues that the initiative will benefit both public sector undertakings—KSRTC and BEVCO.

Implementation Plan:

The existing BEVCO outlet in Sultan Bathery will be relocated to the KSRTC bus terminal as part of the project’s launch. Construction at the designated site within the terminal will begin soon, and the outlet is expected to start functioning within a month. Additionally, KSRTC is prepared to open BEVCO outlets at five other bus terminals across the state. Subject to approval from the Excise Department, premium outlets will be launched at these locations as well.

Criticism and Concerns:

The proposal to set up liquor outlets at bus terminals has drawn criticism and concern from the public and several organizations. Critics argue that such outlets could compromise passenger safety and convenience, especially affecting women and families. However, the government maintains that there is nothing wrong in allocating space for legal businesses at bus terminals. Whether this new attempt to boost KSRTC’s revenue proves practical and financially viable remains to be seen. Ensuring passenger safety and convenience will be crucial during the implementation of the project.
